Abstract
Vocabulary mastery is key to academic success especially for students in the tertiary level of education. This study tries to measure the size of students’ receptive vocabulary knowledge by using Vocabulary Size Test (VST) proposed by Nation. By calculating the number of vocabulary acquired by students, lecturers are expected to follow up by designing a more appropriate classroom activities based on students’ vocabulary mastery. Data showed that majority of students are under 6.000 word families range and only small portion of students are in the range of 8.000-9.000 word families. It has an implication that most of students would not be able to read and understand an English text in a proper way. And they would only able to listen English speech without having the ability to produce sentences. The study also suggests to change type of test used in the future due to some technical problems found in this experiment. However, giving students test on vocabulary mastery at the beginning of the term is worth considering in order to help students improve their English effectively and efficiently.
