Abstract

High density population led to food security issues such as competing access of food supplies and nutrition. Agriculture industry is facing several challenges to meet the demand of the future: demographics, scarcity of natural resources, climate change and food waste. Agriculture 4.0 with digital technologies and analytics are transforming farming operations, making the industry more insight driven and efficient to feed the growing population. Digital-based services are helping to improve financial performance, reduce labor dependency, minimize chemical usage and boost yield. However, less than 10% or very minimumfarming activities in ASEAN particularly Malaysia today is managed using digital technologies due to infrastructure constraints, lack of deliverability of technology know-how and the need for regulation around the capture and exchange of data. Scientist and researchers can play a key part in solving this problem. A broader and international collaborations needs to be structured with non-typical ecosystem of building on public-private R&D partnerships where funding is measured on problem—solving outcome and based on attracting the best talent. By leveraging agriculture 4.0 encompassing digital technologies, sensing technologies and data analytics, regional scientists can help ASEAN countries reduce dependency on imports, develop regional technological development not only for increase agricultural products but also IP and new solutions; which later increase productivity and support shift towards an innovation and knowledge-based economy.
