Abstract

Fertilization is one of the central and strategic aspects in determining the success of the cultivation of palm oil, either economically, socially and environmental sustainability management. Fertilizer costs 40-60% of thetotal cost of maintenance. It involves a relatively large workforce in its application. Therefore, the proper and clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) of fertilization activities becomes a necessity for effective and efficient cultivation process in palm plantations. The purpose of the research are: (1) to identify the implementation of management function of palm oil fertilization in producing production plant at Afdeling I in PT. Perkebunan Nusantara III (PTPN III), Pulau Mandi estate, Asahan Regency in North Sumatra Province, and (2) to assess the technical aspects of the SOP fertilization in PTPN III. Method of the research is qualitative descriptive. Data and information of fertilizing activity in PTPN III were obtained directly through observation at Afdeling I, Pulau Mandi estate. Data then compared with palm oil vademecum and other related literatures. Result of the research shows that management function in fertilizing such as planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling in PTPN III has been running well and according to work instructions companies, but the function of organization and supervision needs to be re-evaluated in the future so that both functions can be run optimal. Input or object of management in fertilizing such as; man, money, materials, machine, and method in PTPN III has been running well but fertilizer work force needs to be evaluated periodically. The technical aspects of fertilization include making fertilizer, retailing and distributing fertilizer, collecting bags of fertilizer, and applying fertilizer. Those activities have been conducted based on SOP and company's work instructions. The activities are based on the principle of 5T, namely; the right kind, the right time, the right dose, the right way and the right place. However, monitoring and evaluation activities have to be conducted periodically. Keywords:SOP, fertilization, management, palm oil
