Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of household food security of paddy farmers in areas with high levels of rural-urban migration in West Sumatera. Using cross section data from 238 farmer households, which are grouped into two, namely HouseHolds migrants and HouseHolds non-migrants. The study was conducted in three villages in the province of West Sumatra; Sungai Tarab village, Tanah Datar district, Sulit Air Village Solok District and the Koto Baru village, Padang Pariaman district. The criteria for determining the location of the study were carried out intentionally (purposive) based on the consideration that the area was an known to have a high paddy production, have a high level migration who had a strong nexus of migrant organizations. The level of food security is proxied from the level of energy and protein sufficiency The results showed that households in the area of origin included food security but each insufficient protein. The level of Energy Sufficiency of migrants HHs was 2251,66 kcal / capita / day (104,73 percent exceeding the standard Nutrition Adequacy Rate (RDA) and non-migrants HHs was 2223.45 kcal / capita / day ( 103.42 percent). The Level of Protein Sufficiency of Non-Migrant HHs is the same as HHs Migrants which have not reached ideal standards. Although the Level of Protein Sufficiency of Non-Migrant HHs was 44.01 gram/capita/day, relatively greater than HHs migrants. was 41,81 gram/capita/day. This fact describes that consumption pattern of food is not nutritious and balanced. Mother’s education in food nutrition and food processing should be increasing, including reduce the use of coconut milk and cooking oil in their menu’s presentment.
