Abstract

shallots is one of commodities priority in indonesia. shallots demand increased in years, not only in the domestic but also in global market. indonesian exports every years average by 9,052 ton (us $ 4,4 million). ironically indonesi ais anet importer of shallots because of the volume of imports greater than exports. over the last 3 years data from BPS in year 2013 the average import of shallots is 103.590 ton (us$ 46,4 million) this paper do the review based on the result of research and secondary data obtained, which aim to assess the potential and direction of development in order to increase productivity shallots cultivation in west sumatra. west sumatra shallots production is only 4,23% of national production, while the center of shallot in brebes (central java) charge 41,50% (419,472 ton) of the national production (1.101.773 ton) west sumatra shallots production is concentrated currently in the highlands. in order to increase the production of shallots in west sumatra, the expansion of planting area on dry land in the lowlands become one of the alternatives. most area west sumatra is a dry land, and from the vast west sumatra 4,22973 million hectares, an area of 1,4089 million hectares is lowland dry land that could potentially used for expantion of shallots planting area. from this study it can dbe concluded that there are opportunities to increase the production of shallots west sumatra by increasing the planting area in the lowland of dry land by utilizing marginal land, however the application of appropriate cultivation technology specific of location area is required
