Abstract

This study will investigate the relationship between English laguange learners’ accuracy in word pronunciation while reading text and their achievement on English proficiency listening tests. This study is seen as an initial step to identify the correlation between pronunciation and listening comprehension skills on rural-based English language learners. Thirty respondents will be recruited for this study. To measure the accuracy of pronunciation, reading aloud activity both at the beginning and at the end of the research period will be recorded for each respondent. Data will be collected by calculating the percentage of accurate word pronunciation based on the segmental features (vowel; consonant; diphthong, etc.). For the listening comprehension variable, data will be collected through TOEIC-like tests administered at the beginning and at the end of the term. To analyze the data, statistical analyses be used to highlights participants performance in both listening tests and accuracy in reading a selected text.. Simple correlation tests will also be performed to see whether there is correlation between the two variables. The result of this research points out that the average percentage of correct answer in the two listening tests is less than 50 percent. Furthermore, even though there is significant correlation flagged in the first set of data, it is proven otherwise when it comes to the second set of data. Therefore, this study has not yet succeeded in providing the statistical proof of the correlation between pronunciation and listening in general.
