Abstract

The use of superior varieties is a reliable technology in increasing the production of food crops, especially rice. In producing superior varieties, it is necessary to carry out directed breeding efforts in order to obtain better strategic potential. The superior cultivars can be produced which can be developed as superior seed agroindustry businesses in the future. This study aims to obtain information on the agronomic characteristics and production potential of several promising mutant lines of rice produced by mutation-induced mutations of local rice in West Sumatra. to later be developed into a more potential source of superior rice seeds. The research was carried out from March 2012 to August 2012. Agronomic characterization was carried out based on the Guidelines for Rice Characterization and Evaluation Systems (Ministry of Agriculture, Research and Development, Ministry of Agriculture and National Germplasm Commission 2003). From the results of the agronomic characterization, information was obtained that almost all of the hoped-for mutant lines had a semi-dwarf posture and were early maturing when compared to the control plants. In addition, there are three promising mutant lines which have higher potential when compared to the production potential of their comparison plants.
